Interview with Claire Molloy
Tuesday, 10 August 2010 08:59    Print

From www.scrumqueens.com

Ireland women's rugby player Claire Molloy tells us about training with the men's Connacht team over the summer and playing with and against England's leading players for her club Bristol. In a video interview she talks about training in Galway and how time is flying by as Ireland prepare for the World Cup. The video is thanks to Irish Rugby TV

To read the full article and watch the video please click here:

The backrow who is relatively new to the Irish team with six caps  says that time is flying in the Irish camp.

“Time has gone so quickly while we have been preparing. I am studying in Wales in Cardiff and back at home in Galway for the summer trying to work and train. I am lucky that Carol Stuanton (another Irish player) is here so we can train together and it makes a world of difference having someone to train with. We are both flankers and we played together at Connacht and we know each other well and match each other well and its very beneficial.”

She also praises the support she gets from her province.

"The Connacht branch have been really great at facilitating us and even invited us to the men’s sessions and we have taken part in some of their sessions which has been great. They are professionals and they show us how they train and it was a bit improvement for us to train with a bunch of people as opposed to just two."

Molloy plays her club rugby in Bristol while she is studying in Wales so she has insider knowledge on the English players Ireland will face in their pool games.

"I have been playing in the English premiership with Bristol and playing with the England captain and they are great players to play with and awful to play against. It’s a great standard to play against."

‘CRAZY HORSES’ WIN MIDLAND SEVENS

RUGBY with MICHAEL SILKE

‘CRAZY HORSES’  had the necessary pedigree to emerge triumphant in the second Midland Sevens tournament staged at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday. Played in ideal conditions – firm sod, fine day but not too hot – an entertaining and competitive competition ensued.

Encouragingly, there was a marked increase in team numbers participating with a cross-country spread supporting the event. Clubs from Dublin to counties Galway and Clare on the western seaboard were among those represented in this pre-season tournament which provides them with an ideal opportunity to get some competitive match time under their collective belts as well as some bonding before the main season kicks off. Full credit to Buccaneers player Alex Hayman on instigating and driving this event on.

First into action included Crazy Horses and Lansdowne Barbarians in their respective pools, with both immediately showing free-scoring form that quickly confirmed their passages to the knockout stages. Quin and All-Sorts joined them in the semi-finals while Tuam made it to the Plate decider where they faced a youthful Springbuccs. The Co. Galway club possessed the necessary guile to prevail 31-10 in that final.

Crazy Horses accounted for the Banner standard bearers 31-12 while Lansdowne proved too slick for All-Sorts winning comfortably 45-12 to set up a mouth-watering pairing between the two best outfits in the final. This proved a pretty competitive affair with Crazy Horses, backboned by a bevy of South Sea islanders such as Leo Au’va and Carl de Cheniu, building an early lead. This proved crucial for as Lansdowne’s challenge gathered momentum, one Horse was a bit too Crazy in tackling and a sin-binning left them hanging on for dear life. But Lansdowne, despite the endeavours of the Meagher brothers, William Wallace (three ex-Buccs) and Robbie Boucher, had left themselves too much to do and Crazy Horses had the composure and nous to record a 34-19 final win.

Buccaneers President Pat Hynes presented the awards to the various winners and he thanked all involved in the successful running of the Midland Sevens, particularly noting the contribution of the match referees. He believes it is an event that will go from strength to strength as it is well run and it provides timely and appropriate pre-season fare for players and mentors alike. After the action, all players were treated to a BBQ at the Bounty (included in the nominal entry fee for each team) and the post-match analysing continued long into the night!

NEW COACH BEREAVED

BUCCANEERS new Senior Coach Hendre Marnitz, who only arrived from South Africa on Monday last, suffered a devasting loss with the death in a motor accident in his native homeland of his brother. He returned home on Friday for the funeral and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this heart-breaking time.
One minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect prior to the final of the Midland Sevens.

‘RUGRATS’ TRIUMPH IN NATIONAL TAG FINALS

RUGRATS, who were venue winners in the ‘Bud Light’ Tag Rugby staged at Dubarry Park, went on to win their section of the national tag rugby finals hosted at Suttonians RFC. They won all their matches and defeated ‘The Hoff’ from St. Mary’s College in the final to capture the B Grade Cup which was presented to them by Mick Galwey. Alex Hayman, Geoff Kenny, Paul Harte, Colin Watters, Conor Lavelle and Elena Moran were among those who led the charge to this notable success.

GOLF CLASSIC

BUCCANEERS annual Golf Classic takes place at the magnificent Glasson Golf & Country Club course on Friday week August 27th. Entries from teams of four are welcome and already there is a hugely promising take up of tee times. Hugh Conlon and Eamonn Fagan are stewarding this ever popular event. Some places may still be available so contact Geraldine at 086-1732711 to book and/or confirm tee off time.

BUCCS AWAY TO YOUNG MUNSTER

BUCCANEERS have a double friendly away to Young Munster at Tom Clifford Park, Limerick, on Saturday afternoon. The Senior teams kick off at 1.30 p.m. while the U-21 squads from both clubs will also taste action there in what should prove more than useful encounters. The Senior squad then travel to Sligo the following weekend where they will be challenged by their hosts on Saturday. After overnighting in Yeats country, they take the relatively short hop west to Ballina where a mainly Junior XV will face the Mayo side on Sunday. Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. with good attendances to date.

PIG RACES ON SATURDAY NIGHT!

We have mentioned Crazy Horses, Rugrats and Barbarians already and we have had our own ‘Piggy’ Moran around the club for years; now it’s time to turn our attention to real pigs!

Buccaneers U-16 squad are participating in a rugby event in France later this year and they are holding a fund-raising PIG DERBY around Dubarry Park on next Saturday evening. This promises to be a real night of craic at The Bounty as well, of course, generating some much-needed funds for this trip. A recent Pig Derby at the nearby Olive Bar attracted a bumper crowd who got a wonderful night’s entertainment so here’s hoping for an action replay at Dubarry Park this Saturday. First race comes under starter’s orders at 7.30 p.m. so let’s see you there early to check out the form, have a little flutter on these porkies and have a fun night out!

NO RIGNEY AT BUCCS THIS SEASON

Last season’s Senior captain Colm Rigney has indicated that he will not be playing rugby with Buccaneers this season. Now domiciled in Galway, I understand that he intends turning out in Galwegians’ colours. Although last season’s campaign did not go as anticipated for ‘Riggs’, his departure brings a long link to the famous sporting family that must stretch nigh on twenty years with the club. At one stage, Colm (the youngest of the brood) played with three of his brothers in a mighty Buccs pack (Brian, Des and Donal) but don’t forget that another brother Kieran was the first of the clan to play with the Pirates. It won’t be quite the same without a Rigney on the team-sheet but we wish Colm all the best.

Coaching Seminar
Wednesday, 18 August 2010 15:08    Print

The Coach Development Department of Connacht Rugby are delighted to announce that Dave McHugh will present a seminar for coaches on the recent Law interpretation changes that are in place for the 2010 / 11 season.  Dave is a former top level international referee having refereed in 3 world cups and 2 Heineken Cup finals.  He is the IRFU high performance Referee Development Officer.  He is currently visiting all four provinces delivering seminars for club coaches on the new law interpretation changes.

Connacht Rugby's coach development manager Eamonn Molloy can not stress the importance of each club sending Coaching Representative to the meetings.  "There are a number of key changes coming into effect this season.  Although the changes are subtle in nature if coaches and players do not bring themselves up to speed they will defiantly be on the back foot for the start of the season so I would urge every senior and junior club to make sure they send a coaching representative to the seminar".

The seminar is open to Senior and Junior 1 coaches throughout the province.  Should you wish to attend please contact Eamonn Molly on 091-561568 or by email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
