The Galwegians U16 were defeated in the U16 All-Ireland final against a very powerful Navan side in Naas last Sunday. The huge Navan side blitzed the Westerners in the 1st quarter with 2 tries and a penalty to lead 15-0 with 15 minutes on the clock. Navan kept the pressure on in the first half that they dominiated and only some very stout defending by Wegians prevented futher scores and left the half-time score at 15-0. The second half was a completely different affair with Wegians storming back at the bigger Navan lads and really showing that they could play good rugby also. A try by Ronan O'Donnell (, converted by Johnathon Daly (15-7) was quickly followed by a penalty by Daly (15-10) - a penalty try could have been given as Jordan Dooley was blatantly taken out 10 meters from the Navan line as he chased a kick ahead. With only a score between the teams Wegians kept the pressure on and looked to have scored a try to level the match but the ref didn't see the touchdown and the opportunity passed. Navan cleared their lines and then worked their way up field to eventually score a penalty giving them a 2 score lead with only 5 mnutes left. Wegians finished the game in the Navan 22 as they desperately looked save the game but time ran out for the brave Connacht champions and Navan were deserving winners in an excellent match with a final score of Navan 18 Galwegians 10. |
