The Glynn Cup kicked off in spectacular fashion on St Patricks day!
The Glynn Cup kicked off in spectacular fashion on St Patricks day. With over 400 players from Corinthians and Galwegians taking part it was a major feat of organisation. The new format was certainly a huge hit and it came right down to the wire in the end, with the result of the senior game holding the key to the historic trophy. Galwegians opened an early account in the Youths department with a 3 points to 2 lead (bagging the coveted Langan Trophy) and after Galwegians Women's beat Corinthians Women's 10 7 in a game of Tag Rugby took a respectable 4 competition points to 2 lead. Corinthians bounced back when it came to adult rugby though with their U20's, 2nds and 3rds all registering solid wins to leave the competition Corinthians 5 Galwegians 4. Going into the final it was all to play for, Corinthians held the lead in the competition by a single point but when Galwegians beat them 14 - 10 it went down to trys scored in the Senior game. Galwegians 2nd try, scored by Derek Boyd, was enough to tip the scales in their favour 2 trys to 1 and so the Glynn Cup returns to Glenina for the first time since 1992. Connacht President Michael Grealish had this to say: "I'm thrilled with the event and how well it has worked out. It's fantastic to see this competition taking place once again and the new format certainly worked well. I'm sure everyone involved is already looking forward to next years competition which I hope will prove to be just as exciting. I'd like to compliment Eugene Doyle President of Corinthians and Mick Casserly President of Galwegians and the organising committees from both clubs for putting together this festival of rugby. I'd also like to congratulate Galwegians RFC on claiming the title for the first time in over a decade, it's been a long wait but a thoroughly deserved win. I'd also like to express my sincere thanks to the Glynn family for their involvement and I hope that now it has been restarted that it will continue for many years to come" Brian Murphy takes on Richie Forbes in the Senior match For more photos of the day please follow the below links: Glynn Cup 2009 Photos - Andrew Flaus Glynn Cup 2009 Photos - Alan Deegan |
